Overview

This Train the Trainer programme is designed to build participants’ confidence and capability in planning, designing, delivering and evaluating effective training.

The programme combines practical teaching strategies with structured planning tools, learner engagement methods and assessment approaches, concluding in a 20-minute micro-teach and a personal development plan for continued improvement.

Learning Outcomes:

  • By the end of this programme, participants will be able to plan structured training sessions, write clear learning objectives, use interactive delivery methods, assess learning effectively, deliver a focused micro-teach session and use feedback to inform their ongoing development as trainers.
  • Understand the differences between coaching and mentoring.
  • Be able to distinguish between training and coaching and identify when each approach is most appropriate in the workplace.
  • Understand the benefits of coaching and training for individual and organisational development.
  • Use the GROW model to structure a simple coaching conversation.
  • Use the OSCAR model as a practical tool to support reflection, action planning and review.
  • Be able to apply basic coaching techniques to support learner development and workplace performance.

Content

Day 1: Foundations of Effective Training Delivery

Day 1 focuses on the essential principles of effective training practice. Participants will explore the full training cycle and develop the skills needed to design learner-centred sessions that are purposeful, engaging and measurable.

  • Effective teaching strategies for workplace learning.
  • The training cycle – planning, designing, delivering and evaluating training.
  • Training needs analysis (TNA) and techniques for identifying learner requirements.
  • Approaches for engaging learners and promoting participation.
  • VARK learning styles- understanding and responding to meet different learning styles
  • Creating session plans and schemes of work.
  • Using Bloom’s Taxonomy to setting clear training objectives and ensure measurable learning.
  • Interactive techniques to increase learner engagement and involvement.
  • Applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques in learning and development
  • Assessment strategies to check whether learning objectives have been met.

Day 2: Micro-Teach Practice and Development Planning

On Day 2, participants will apply the learning from Day 1 by planning and delivering a short micro-teach session. This practical element allows them to demonstrate effective training techniques, receive feedback and identify clear actions for improvement.

  • Participants will create a lesson plan for a 20-minute micro-teach session.
  • The lesson plan will include clear objectives, planned activities and clear assessment methods.
  • Each participant will deliver a 20-minute micro-teach on a chosen workplace-related topic relevant to their own area of training.
  • The micro-teach will focus on applying effective teaching strategies and learner engagement techniques introduced on Day 1.
  • Participants will design an evaluation form to gather structured peer feedback on their micro-teach session.
  • Feedback received will be used to reflect on strengths and areas for development.
  • Participants will create a personal development plan to improve their training techniques and support continued professional growth

Day 3: Coaching and Mentoring Skills

This half-day introduces participants to the core principles of coaching and mentoring.
It is designed to help trainers understand when coaching, mentoring and training are most appropriate, and how simple coaching frameworks can support learner development and workplace performance.

  • Definitions of coaching and mentoring, including the key differences and similarities between both approaches.
  • Comparing training and coaching, including when each approach is most effective in the workplace.
  • The benefits of training and coaching for individual performance, confidence, development and organisational capability.
  • Simple coaching techniques to support reflection, action planning and continuous improvement in a workplace setting
  • An introduction to the GROW model as a simple framework for structuring coaching conversations
  • An introduction to the OSCAR model as a practical coaching and mentoring framework
